Noise exposure calculator for noise risk assessment

You have got your noise assessment giving you the noise levels for a particular job, but you are maybe changing the runtime of the machine or changing the number of hours people are working.

Or, maybe you have known noise level from the noise assessment for a job but want to change the working pattern so a person now does two different jobs in a day and you need to know the impact of this on their daily noise exposure. Or more simply, you have a known noise level for a job and know how long it is done for and just want to know what the daily noise dose is for that.

In a noise assessment, the noise risk is a combination of how loud it is and how long the person is exposed, or what the combination of a few jobs are done within a day and what the total noise dose is for that. This free noise exposure calculator will give you those daily noise exposures.

Noise exposure calculator for noise risk assessment of a single exposure or multiple jobs.

The most common one used is the daily noise exposure, the top form, but sometimes if all the noise is on one or two days in a week the weekly noise exposure calculation could be more suitable.

You can use this to enter the noise level and exposure duration of a single job, or add multiple jobs to get a combined exposure level.

Whichever you choose, the limits applied in a noise assessment are the same:

At a daily or weekly noise dose of 80 dB(A) the Noise Regs require:

  • A noise assessment to be done and be in place

  • Noise safety training for exposed persons

  • Reduce the noise exposures where reasonably possible

  • Hearing protection to be available but usage can be optional.

At a daily or weekly noise dose of 85 dB(A) the Noise Regs require:

  • The noise assessment to be done and in place

  • Noise safety training for all exposed persons.

  • Reduce the noise exposures where reasonably possible to do so.

  • Hearing protection must be mandatory

  • Usage of hearing protection must be monitored by the employer, and enforced where needed.

  • Hearing testing (health surveillance) must be in place.

Remember: When doing a noise assessment or a noise survey, or just looking at a single job, noise levels occasionally going over the 85 dB(A) limit is not necessarily a problem, it depends how often it goes over and for how long, hence exposure duration is so important.
