Noise assessments at work - workplace noise surveys

Noise assessments for all workplaces nationwide, measuring employee noise exposure levels to help companies comply with the HSE’s Noise Regs.

30+ years of experience of noise surveys and noise monitoring in all industries across England, Scotland and Wales.

Using Type 1 noise meters, along with wearable personal noise dosimeters, I can provide an industrial noise assessment for any factory, school, hospital, warehouse or music venue, basically any location where individuals may be exposed to a noise risk at work.

All noise risks measured

Whether it is a routine production line where most days are the same, or a workshop where the jobs vary from day to day, my workplace noise assessments will cover it.

Daily noise exposures

Via calculations done using measured noise levels and shift patterns, or wearable longer-term noise dosimeters, daily noise doses are included as required by the Noise Regs.

Hearing protection assessed

All noise assessments for workplaces include verification of the suitability of the hearing protection in place and recommendations for alternative styles if needed.

Whatever the industry, with 30 years of experience in workplace noise assessment I can cover it. I have produced noise assessments for packaging, printing, food processing, agriculture, ship building, NHS hospitals, armed forces, retail distribution, engineering, joinery, automotive, nightclubs, recycling centres, windows and door manufacture, aviation, ships at sea and many more.

I provide industrial noise assessments anywhere in the UK.

Who needs a workplace noise assessment?

Basically, any place of employment (or where volunteers work) where noise levels may be over 80 dB(A). As a guide, do you need to raise your voice to have a conversation? If so a noise assessment or noise survey is needed to measure the noise levels and identify if there is an issue.

How long does a noise assessment take?

It depends on the production cycles in your workplace and I will be there as long as is needed to get all the noise risk data. I have 15 noise meters so the noise assessment can cover a wide area quite quickly - effectively in every hour I can gather 15 hours’ worth of noise data.

The noise assessment report

My noise assessment report is written to tell the employer exactly what they need. Clear guidance is given on hearing protection needs based on job and zone of the workplace, suitability of the protection, who needs health surveillance or noise training and I will suggest some noise reduction measures.

My competence for noise assessments

Certification of Competence from the Institute of Acoustics means I understand noise assessment. NEBOSH Diploma means I know where it fits into wider health and safety. Membership of the British Society of Audiology means I have a great level of knowledge on the health impacts of noise. And 30 years of putting theory into practice.

Superb value noise assessments

As I am just me there is no corporate office to maintain, no fleets of shiny-suited sales reps, no admin people, basically nothing to add fixed costs to my business. That means I can do noise assessments which are of extremely high quality but at a very competitive cost as I don’t have the overheads of the corporates.

How often is a noise assessment needed?

The basic Noise Regs requirement is that you need to look at the assessment regularly to confirm things haven’t changed and re-do it when there is reason to think levels may be different.I have a longer answer on this here:

When to repeat a noise assessment

2025 is upon us, but what noise assessments did I do in 2024?

In 2024 I did noise assessments in several agricultural organisations in , a lot of food production sites ranging from small places with a dozen or so personnel up to large sites employing over a thousand people. A lot of metal engineering or joinery workshops, packaging companies, a liquid gas site, several window and door places, plastics manufacturing, foundries, a place making contact lenses, a site making props for the film and TV industries, some skin care and pharmaceutical sites, a place testing satellites for launch stresses, a company making show trailers, a couple of breweries, magazine printing, a few recycling centres and supermarket distribution centres.

The furthest north was Inverness, the furthest south was either Dover or Cornwall.

My workplace noise assessment quotes are a simple single price with no extras and no hidden additional costs.

As a sole-person noise assessment specialist my prices are extremely keen - I have no corporate office to maintain, no sales reps, no accountants, basically nobody who needs a salary paying off the back of the noise assessments except me. That means I can provide very high quality noise assessments at an extremely competitive price.

With no faceless company to hide behind you are dealing with the noise assessment consultant directly, and I have direct accountability for every noise assessment report done. You don’t want the HSE jumping on you for an inadequate noise assessment and with no big company to hide behind neither do I as that would make me very sad, and poorer, so I do it right every time.
